Some Thoughts on the Semi-Classical Limit of the Focusing NLS

Abstract:

I will report an on-going study of the semi-classical limit of solution of the focusing Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) in one spatial dimension. The equation is completely integrable. However, its solution exhibits highly irregular rapid oscillations due to the so-called modulational instability. I will compare these oscillations with those of KdV. Analytically, I will show how we are attacking the problem and where we are stuck. Numerically, I will indicate how we are trying to capture the semi-classical limit.
