This story started when some Ph.D. students and myself were given the opportunity (by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Kroeller Mueller Museum, also in the Netherlands) to study high resolution digitized versions of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. We found we could "detect" whether some of these were copies or authentic -- this was even featured in a NOVA snippet on television. A year later, it turned out things were not that simple ...
