PREP Workshop Welcome Message

We welcome you to the MAA PREP Workshop, Calculus: Online and Interactive. The workshop will be conducted online using Adobe Connect and will run from Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 26.

On the workshop web site you will find a schedule for the workshop, and you will see that we have two additional presenters who will make cameo appearances.

You can see pictures and short bios for Maria and Mike (as well as Moore, Smith, and Tysdal) at the workshop Presenters Page. You will find names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses for all the participants on the Participant Page.

Here are a few things we would like you to do in preparation for the Workshop:

  1. Prepare to use the online textbook. Download Firefox 3 and the MathML fonts. You will find detailed instructions and the reasons for doing this at the Getting Started Page at the Calculus: Modeling and Application site. Be sure to change the Firefox default from opening pages in new tabs to opening them in new windows.
  2. Prepare to use Adobe Connect.
    1. Read the two-page pdf file, Using VOIP with Adobe Connect We have highlighted the important parts for participants in yellow.
    2. Obtain headphones and a microphone. A combination headset with microphone is fine.
    3. Run the Adobe Connection Wizard. This will tell you if your version of Flash Player is current, check your connection speed, and download the Connect Pro software.
    4. Either during the Sunday test time (see below) or just before the first session run the audio setup wizard. (Once in the meeting room, use the drop-down Meeting menu at the top left, select Manage My Settings, and then Audio Setup Wizard.)
  3. Do the pre-workshop assignment.
  4. Fill out the Pre-Workshop Evaluation Survey. This eight question survey will take about five minutes to complete. The completed survey will go directly to Barbara Edwards, evaluator for the PREP Program. We will only receive summaries of the survey results -- after the workshop and without identification of any individual participant.

We will open the PREP Conference Room between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm (EDT) on Sunday, June 21. If you have not used Adobe Connect before and want to get familiar with it or if you want to ask a question about the workshop, you can do so at this time. Lang Moore and/or David Smith will be available in the room.

Again, welcome to the workshop. We look forward to meeting with you next week.
