Calculus: Online and Interactive

An MAA PREP Workshop

Lang Moore, David Smith, Kimber Tysdal

June 22 - 26, 2009

This workshop is designed to acquaint participants with the online interactive calculus book, Calculus: Modeling and Application developed by the organizers as part of the NSF-funded MAA project, MathDL Books Online, NSF Grant DUE-231083. This book has been approved for publication by MAA in 2010.

A one-variable calculus course using this textbook is in its third year at Hood College. In addition, four other colleges are using the text for the first time in the 2008-09 academic year. The workshop will be valuable for anyone interested in using online interactive materials for a calculus course, but we also hope to recruit some workshop participants to use the book at their home institutions. We encourage teams from a given school to apply. All members of a team should be in the same physical location during the workshop.

In addition to a reasonably up-to-date computer with a fast internet connection, each participant will need to have access to headphones, a microphone, and, if desired, a web camera. A headset (earphones and microphone) works well, but microphones built into either computer or a web camera do not work well. No special software is required.

The online sessions will be scheduled for 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM (EDT) and 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM (EDT) on Monday, June 22 - Thursday, June 25. On Friday, June 26 there will be only the 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM (EDT) session.
