| Office Hours: |

me questions. Students should also make use of the Mathematics
department Help Room.
|
| Lectures: |
Tuesday and Thursday, 11:40 am – 12:55 pm, Physics
Building, room 047 |
| Requirements: |
Daily problem sets, weekly quizzes, 2 in-class tests, final
exam |
| Homework: | Each covered section of the book
has problems assigned from it which you must complete for homework (see the Mathematics 103 Fall 2010
Syllabus for these assignments). You should complete the problems from each section shortly after that
section is covered in class.
Homework assignments will be collected at the beginning of class every
Thursday. The web page above lists both the homework assignments and their due dates. Late homework will never be accepted.
On the front page of your homework, please put your name and the section
numbers of the problems. If you forget to write your name on your homework you will not
receive credit for that assignment. Multiple page submissions must be stapled before you get to class. You
must show your work to receive credit for a problem.
Math is no different than anything else: you must practice a lot to get good at it. If you do
not do every assigned homework problem you will probably not do well in this class. |
| Quizzes: | There will be a short (10 – 15
minute) quiz at the beginning of class most Tuesdays based on the material
covered the previous week. | |
| Tests: |
There will be two in-class tests. See the section web page for what each test will cover and for their tentative dates. You may practice problems from old exams used by previous Math 103 sections to help you study for the tests and the final exam. There are links to some of old practice exams on the section web page above. |
| Final Exam: |
The block final exam will be Saturday, December 18th, 9 am
– 12 noon. |
| Course Grade: |
Your final grade will be based on these four requirements as
follows:
| | Homework: | 10% |
| | Quizzes: | 15% |
| | In-class Tests: | 40% |
| | Final Exam: | 35% |
|
| Calculutors: | Calculators are not
allowed on the in-class quizes, tests, or on the final exam. |
| Missed Work: | Homework must be handed in on
time. Unexcused late homework will not be accepted. Unexcused missed
quizzes and tests may not be made up. If you experience an incapacitating
short-term illness you must notify me as per the instructions at
http://trinity.duke.edu/academic-requirements?p=policy-short-term-illness-notification
prior to the class in which the graded assignment is due or quiz/test will occur. If you will miss class due to an officially
recognized religious holiday you must notify me at least two weeks in advance. See
http://trinity.duke.edu/academic-requirements?p=religious-observance
for instructions.
|
| Ethics: | Students are expected to adhere to
the Duke Community Standard (see http://www.integrity.duke.edu/ugrad/student.html). |
| You are encouraged to discuss the
homework assignments with your fellow students and both offer and receive
advice. However, the final submission must be your own work. For
in-class tests, quizzes, and the final exam, you must work completely
independently. |
