Robert Alexander Shearer, age 91, of Danville Street in Lancaster, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born Friday, June 1, 1917 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Robert & Mary Brown Long Shearer. Mr. Shearer was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice Scott Shearer and was currently married to Judith Kirby Shearer. He was a dedicated member of the Lancaster Christian Church, where he served as choir leader for over 50 years, Elder Emeritus, Sunday School Superintendent & Teacher, and was part of the church building program in the 1950’s. Mr. Shearer graduated from Transylvania University in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and a double minor in English and Philosophy. He was a farmer and worked as an amateur radio personality for the Disciples of Christ RadioNet (DARF). Mr. Shearer was an active member of the Farm Bureau, where he once served as president of the board. In addition to his current wife, Mr. Shearer leaves behind one son, Robert Lynn (Pam) Shearer of Elizabethtown; three step-children, Sheila (Bob) Miller of Richmond, Michael (Joanna) Kirby of Lancaster, and Bryan (Connie) Kirby of Richmond; two grandchildren, Robert Alexander “Alex” (Vickie) Shearer II of Elizabethtown and Lynn Chapin Shearer (Aaron) Brown of West Lafayette, Indiana; five step-grandchildren, Chad (Shannon) Smith of Florence, Meara (Garrett) Brown of Glennville, Georgia, Sytira Kirby of Richmond, Virginia, and Megan & Patrick Kirby of Lexington; and two great-grandchildren, Braden & Grant Shearer of Elizabethtown; and two step great-grandchildren, Trenton Brown of Glennville, Georgia, and Liam Smith of Florence. In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Shearer was preceded in death by a half brother, William Long. An Appreciation of Life service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Lancaster Christian Church with Rev. Don Burton and Rev. Bryce McCulley officiating. Burial will follow in Lancaster Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Robert Alexander “Alex” Shearer II, Aaron Brown, Tim Layton, Harold Erick Layton, Will Stambaugh, Bob Miller, Mike, Bryan & Patrick Kirby, and Chad Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Layton, Charles Scott, Billy Broadus, David & Shelton Moss, Jim Gulley, James & Dora Sue Davis, Gloria Candler, Len Smith, and Jimmy Sanders. Visitation will be held 5-8 PM Friday, April 10, 2009 at Ramsey Funeral Home and from 9:00 until service time on Saturday at the church.
