Little, 100 Oldham, Roberts & Powell Paint Lick -- Mrs. Hazel C. Little, a native of Paint Lick, Ky., who resided for many years in Richmond, Va., passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010. Mrs. Little celebrated her 100th birthday in February of this year. She was the daughter of Elbert and Willie H. Calico of Paint Lick and Richmond, Ky. Mrs. Little was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Little, also a Paint Lick native, who was for many years the Superintendent of Schools in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Little is survived by: her sister, Betty Calico French of Cochran, Ga.; a niece, Linda K. Fowler of Danville, Ga.; and two nephews, Curtis M. French of Tallahassee, Fla., and George L. French of Atlanta, Ga. While a resident of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Little was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church; a president of the James River Woman's Club and Ginter Park Woman's Club; and a former member of the Forest Hills Garden Club. Mrs. Little returned to Kentucky after her husband's death. Mrs. Little taught school in Kentucky for many years, having taught in Garrard, Marion, Adair and Greenup counties. She received a B.S. in Mathematics from what is now Eastern Kentucky University, and an M.A. in Library Science from Peabody Teachers College (later incorporated into Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tenn. She was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by Eastern Kentucky University. Mrs. Little has been a generous donor to Eastern Kentucky University, and was a major supporter of the EKU Libraries Capital Improvement Campaign. In recognition, the 80,000 square foot addition to the Grant Crabbe Library was named the "Thomas C. and Hazel Little Building." Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home in Richmond, Ky. Graveside services will be follow at the Manse Cemetery in Paint Lick, where Hazel will be interred next to her beloved husband Tom.
