Math 114.01 and 114.02

Plan for Week 6

Week 6 (February 15 - February 19).

On Monday we will continue to consider consequences of Cauchy's Theorem. In particular, we will work through a proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. On Wednesday, we will show that differentiable complex-valued functions have Taylor series expansions. Then, on Friday we will work in groups on review questions in preparation for the in-class test on Monday, February 22. Also, the take-home part of the test will be given out on Friday, due back at the time of the test on Monday.

There will be only one homework assignment this week. It will be due on Monday, February 22. However, you may want to review power series in Section 17.6 before class on Wednesday.

Practice problems for class on Wednesday, February 17. These will not be collected.

Section 17.6: 1, 2, 3, 7, 9

Homework due on Monday, February 22.

Section 18.4: 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 31, 32

Note on #31: There are a couple of ways to approach this. You can just determine the coefficients recursively -- an depends on an - 2 and an - 1 -- or you can solve the initial value problem and express the solution in terms of power series expansions for known functions.
