Final Examination
The final examination for all sections of Math 31L will be Wednesday,
December 16, 7:00-10:00
pm. Section 14 will take the exam in Room 114, Physics Building.
Assignments
The
syllabus
for the semester will be handed out on the first day of class. It is written for a class with three 50 minute lectures a week, so we will make some adjustments for our section that has two 75 minute lectures a week. See
here for details
on precise assignments for the Tuesday-Thursdsay schedule.
Each assignment consists of reading, which should be done BEFORE the material is covered in class, and a number of homework assignments. Homework will be collected the day after the material is assigned and will be (partially) graded. Most lectures will start with a short (ten minute) quiz of problems from the homework due that day. There will be no makeup quizzes, but the lowest three quiz grades (including 0 for missed quizzes) will be dropped for every student.
Laboratory
The laboratory meets on Wednesdays at 1:10 in 111
Gross Chemistry. A number of the labs will require reports that
must be handed in at the laboratory a week later.
For other labs, short quizzes may be given in lieu of a report to be handed in.
The exact assignment for each lab will be announced during that lab
(and will also be posted
here ).
There are three scheduled hour tests which are tentatively scheduled for: Tuesday, September 29, Wednesday, November 4, and Tuesday, December 8. There is also a "gateway" test on differentiation that must be passed in order to complete the course, although it will not affect your final grade. There is a three hour final exam during the exam period.
Help Room and Office Hours
There is a Help Room staffed by calculus instructors and assistants. The hours are
1 - 10 pm Monday thru Thursday and 6 - 10 pm on Sundays. The help room is located in 08 West Duke Building. I will be in the help room on Thursdays 1-2, but you may go to the help room at any time it is open. Special conferences with me can also be arranged by appointment, although I will not hold other office hours for this course.
Grading
Grades will be determined using the following (approximate) weighting:
Laboratory Reports 20%
Quizzes (Classroom and Lab) 15
Homework 5
Hour Tests 30
Final Exam 30
The same final exam is given to all sections of Math 31L, and the performance of this section on the final will have a significant effect on the grade distribution for the class.
