Grading Comment Codes

These codes will be used sometimes in the grading, as a shorthand for the graders.  Note, they will not always be used, depending on the preference of the grader; so, the absence of one of these codes has no meaning at all.

Meaning
circled number
This is the number of points you have been awarded for that problem.
cross out
This is incorrect.
check mark
This is correct, or at least is correctly concluded from previous errors.
question mark
The grader cannot understand what this part of your answer means, or where it came from, or how it relates to the problem or the rest of the solution.



Reasoning/explanation problems
R1
You need to show more work to illustrate your thought process.
R2
Your reasoning is not valid.
R3
Your explanation is unclear or awkward, suggestive of the possibility that your understanding might be weak.
R4
There appear to be multiple answers here, at least one of which is incorrect.
R5
Your answer seems to correspond to a different question than what was asked.
R6
Your answer uses a method that is disallowed for this problem.
R7
Your answer uses a method that is not allowed in this course.
R8
Your argument shows the converse of what you were supposed to show; this is not logically equivalent.



Notational problems
N1
This notation is not standard, and should not be used.  (See General Comments page.)  If this is a notation you are accustomed to, or if you do not know how else to write it, please talk to the instructor to determine the notation that should be used in this course.
N2
The grader cannot make sense out of the notation you have used.
N3
The grader cannot read your handwriting.  (See General Comments page.)

The grader cannot distinguish your handwritten representation of certain symbols.  (See General Comments page.)

You are using an equal sign incorrectly.  (See General Comments page.)



Algebraic/arithmetic errors
A1
This appears to be a transcription error.
A2
You need to simplify your answer.  (See General Comments page.)
A3
This appears to be an arithmetic error or inadvertent error in algebra.
A4
This error suggests a serious problem with your algebraic skills.  You should take appropriate actions to ensure that you achieve algebraic proficiency, which is assumed for this course.  (See General Comments page.)
