Math 123S: Geometry Homework Assignments
Day 1: 28 August
- Read: Chapter 1
- Exercises: 1,2,5,6,7
Day 2: 30 August
- Exercises: 4, 8, 12 (see pp. 23-25)
- Major Exercises: 1, 3
Day 3: 4 September
- Read: Chapter 2, pp. 38-50
- Exercises: 1, 2, 3, 4 (see pp. 63-64)

Day 5: 11 September
- Major Exercises:1,2,7 (see pp. 65-67)
Day 6: 13 September
- Exercise 12 (p. 65), where you should actually
draw a diagram (as we drew for the Fano plane) depicting
a geometry with these properties. Can you show that it
is unique up to isomorphism? Also, do Major Exercise 8 (p. 67),
which is related, and that you might want to do first, and
Major Exercises 9,10.
- Read: Chapter 3, up to Axioms of Congruence (p. 82).
Don't be discouraged by how complicated this section is.
We are going to take some time over it. You should pay
special attention to the proofs, since they are models
of how we want our proofs to go in the future.
Day 7: 18 September
- Exercises: 1,2,3,5 (p. 104)
- Read again: Chapter 3, up to Axioms of Congruence (p. 82).
Betweenness is often the hardest concept for beginning students
to get right.
Day 8: 20 September
- Exercises: 9, 11, 12, 17 (pp. 106-107)
- Read: Chapter 3, Axioms of Congruence (pp. 82-92).
This should be easier, but still no cakewalk. We'll
start on the exercises for this next week.
Day 9: 25 September
- No new exercises assigned.
- Reread: Chapter 3,
Axioms of Betweenness and Congruence (pp. 72-92).
Day 10: 27 September
- Exercises: 20, 21, 24, 25 (pp. 107-109) (Congruence)
Day 11: 2 October
- Exercises: 26, 27, 28 (pp. 107-109) (Congruence)
- Read: Chapter 3, Axioms of Continuity (pp. 93-102).
Day 12: 4 October
- Exercises: 34, 35 (pp. 107-110) (Continuity)
- Read: Chapter 4, Neutral Geometry, pp. 115-121).
(Stop before reading "Measure of Angles and Segments".)
Day 13: 9 October
- Exercises: 10, 11, 12, 13 (pp. 137-138)
- Read: Chapter 4, from
"Measure of Angles and Segments"
to "Angle Sum of a Triangle" (pp. 122-134).
Day 14: 11 October
- Exercises: 4, 5, 15 (pp. 136-138)
- Reread: Chapter 4
Day 15: 18 October

- Read through Exercises: 27, 28, 29 (p. 142)
- Major Exercises: 1,2 (pp. 143-4). (NB: In my copy of
the book, there is a typo that labels Major Exercise 2 with a '4'.)
- Read: Chapter 5: History of the Parallel Postulate.
(to be discussed on Monday, 30 October)
