- Homework: (40%)
- There will be regular homework assignments.
The algorithm for the due date is as follows: Homework assigned in any given
week is due on the first day of class of the following week. (This will
usually be Monday, of course, but at least once (Fall Break) it will be
Wednesday.)
- Exams: (40%)
- There will be two exams, a midterm (20%) and a final (20%). These
will be in-class and closed book.
- Projects: (20%)
- Each student will be required to choose one project from
an approved list. The final result of the
project will be a 15-20 page report on the subject chosen. The first
draft of the project is due before Thanksgiving break. The second draft
will be due by the last day of class.
Please provide me with the following information on 3x5 cards or via email
- Name
- E-mail address
- OK to publish in Class List? (If you respond 'yes', and if I do put this on the web,
its access will be restricted to Duke IP addresses.)
- Recent math classes
- Reason for taking this course (idle curiosity is a reasonable answer)
- (optional) Favorite band (This helps me learn something aobut who you are.)
As for myself, I listen mainly to classical music,
but my rock/pop listening these days
wanders around in {Radiohead, REM, Indigo Girls, Gypsy Kings, Jeff Buckley,
Whiskeytown, Joni Mitchell, Cowboy Junkies} depending on my mood.
- (optional) Recent novel you liked (Idle curiosity again.) I just finished
Vernor Vinge's A Deepness in the Sky, which may not be deep, but it
sure was fun.
