going back to my
departmental web page, and you can always consult

for other course information.
Research
I'm interested in the geometry of partial differential
equations (as always), but, more specifically, I have been thinking
about conservation laws for PDE, Finsler geometry, aspects of the
Ricci flow in Riemannian geometry, geometry of CR-hypersurfaces,
calibrations, and applications to algebraic geometry.
Editorship
- I am on the editorial board of
Differential Geometry and Its Applications,
but do not submit manuscripts directly to me.
Instead send them to the Editor-in-Chief,
O. Kowalski,
and (if you like) let him know that you request
that your manuscript be assigned to me. Since I do not maintain
a local log file of submitted manuscripts for DGA, sending them
to the central office is the only way to ensure that your
manuscript will be properly logged and treated in a timely fashion.
- I'm on the editorial board of the Duke Mathematical Journal,
but do not submit manuscripts directly to me. Instead, follow the
instructions inside the front cover of a recent issue of the DMJ. For
further information, you can send email to
the DMJ office.
- I am on the editorial board of
Communications in Analysis and Geometry,
but, again, submit manuscripts to the
CAG journal secretary,
not to me!
- I am an Associate Editor of the Journal of the AMS.
(This does not mean that you can submit manuscripts to me!
You should instead follow the instructions on the JAMS web page.)
Service to the American Mathematical Society
I served on the Executive Council of the AMS until 31 January 2004
and was the chair of their Committee on Publications until 31 March 2004.
I now serve on the AMS Editorial Boards Committee and on the
von Neumann Symposium Committee.
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute
I served as the Chair of the Board of Trustees
of the Mathematical Sciences
Research Institute in Berkeley, California until my
term expired in April of 2004. The new MSRI Board chair is Don Saari.
Vietnam Education Foundation
I served on the Board of the
Vietnam Education Foundation
from 2000 to 2005.
Park City/IAS Mathematics Institute
As of 2006, I sit on the Steering Committee of the PCMI
and it is planned that I will become the director of the PCMI
in January 2007. For further information, please consult
the PCMI website.
Chamber Arts Society
I am the director of the Chamber Arts Society of Durham.
For more information, including programs, please consult
The Chamber Arts Society of Durham.
