Camping Trip to Peaks of the Otter

Troop 412 camped at Peaks of the Otter, off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, May 29-31, 1999.

All the boys camped and ate together the first night. Here the senior patrol leader is giving the younger scouts some guidance about preparing the troop dinner. A watched pot never boils.
O.K. guys. This thing is a stump. And here the senior boys are making plans for the next two days.

Maybe some fire would help. The two patrol leaders are showing the new scouts how to build a cooking fire and then how to cook pancakes over the fire. Add water, shake, and pour in the pan.

The bus stops here. On the second day the older scouts and two leaders left the base camp to backpack along the Appalachian Trail to Thunder Ridge campsite. They slept at Thunder Ridge Sunday night, and hiked out to the parkway on Monday morning. Who took this picture?
The packs were heavy, but the breaks at the overlooks made it well worthwhile. Will somebody carry my pack? Where are the backpacks?
Who's cooking?
The campsite on the trail was a welcome sight.
Whose golf ball is this?
Tod leads the charge to the top.
Mike joined the others on the trail.
The troop emerges at the end of the hike on Monday morning.

The French toast was delicious! On Sunday morning the younger scouts cooked breakfast and then hiked around the nearby lake, where they saw several deer.
This is the calm before the poisonous snake
	was sighted.
That's the same lake, 2 miles behind them. After lunch the younger boys hiked 2 miles to the top of Sharp Top Mountain. A rugged assistant scoutmaster holds the peak for Troop 412. This is really a mountain man we encountered.

How much room is left on the bus? Our Scoutmaster is demonstrating how to stow a tent properly.

After reassembling on Monday morning, the Troop puts out the campfire and loads the bus.
Safety first! Notice how well the boys stow the tents.
