Troop 412 at the MAWAT Camporee, April 2000

The year 2000 MAWAT district camporee was held at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, NC, April 28 through April 30.

For the first time in many years Troop 412 had grown to three patrols. You see all three of them in formation at a flag ceremony in this picture.
Is Daniel wearing long underwear?

The weather turned unseasonable cold, and several days of rain presented the scouts with unexpected challenges. Although this was the first time camping with the Troop for those who recently bridged from cubs, the new scouts responded with enthusiasm. Here you see how they dealt with the weather.
Duke shirt and Carolina cup? Raincoat or short-sleeve shirt?

The three patrols from Troop 412 entered as many of the competitions as time and weather would permit.

Here's Canada. Here's Mexico. The Zippos' patrol receives instruction just before starting the orienteering competition. In the picture at the right they are starting the fire building competion. Are you sure we can do this by rubbing wet sticks together?

The log pull was a fun event which tested the boys' ability to tie knots and to work as a team. Here you see the beginning, when boys are rushing to tie their knots--followed by the pull. Wait, guys, where are you going? Is everyone pulling?

Here the Pirates patrol (left) and the Night Hawks partrol (right) pose in one of the rare moments the sun was shining.
That's not a pirate hat! We claim this territory for the Night Hawks.

And then there were the natural challenges.

A watched pot ... Cooking and KP in the rain.
Is that the SPL?
Not another pot!

We lived and played and worked in mud for two days! Why should I put on clean socks?

Would the bus be able to pull out of the mud? Yes, and we brought a significant amount of Granville County back to Durham with us!
A-slippin' and a-slidin' . How many boxes will one bus hold? Does it have all-wheel drive?
