Information about Math Activities in the Math Department

DUMU: Duke University Math Union (student math club)
An organizational meeting for the Duke University Math Union will be held in Math-Physics 113 at 7:30pm on Thursday August 26. The agenda at that meeting includes information about the PRUV Fellow program, the Problem Solving Seminar (Math 149S), the Duke Math Meet for high school students, information about math competitions, and a discussion of the Undergraduate Math Lecture Series. Those with an interest in these events are urged to attend. Encourage your friends who might be interested to come along.

PRUV fellowships: summer research in mathematics
Through a grant from the National Science Foundation VIGRE program, up to eight current sophomores and juniors may be supported for six weeks of summer research in mathematics and its applications.
At 4:30 on Wednesday, August 25, two current PRUV Fellows will give short talks on their research projects. Other talks will be scheduled for mid September. All interested parties are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. The talks are scheduled for Math-Physics 157.

Math 149S: Problem Solving Seminar
The Problem Solving Seminar is a half credit course that will meet one day a week during the fall term. Students will work on challenging mathematics problems in the company of others with similar interests. A time for the seminar will be selected at the DUMU meeting on Thursday.
Enrollment will be limited to students who have competed at the level of the AIME. Those who did not take this exam in high school but feel that they are qualified should contact David Kraines or Oaz Niz.

Math Competitions:
The Virginia Tech Math Contest will be held on Saturday, October 23, from 9 to 11:30. The W.L. Putnam Mathematical Competition will be held on Saturday, December 2, from 10 to 1 and 3 to 6. All regularly enrolled Duke undergraduates may participate. Those enrolled in Math 149S are required to participate. See David Kraines for more information.

Duke Math Meet:
This ARML style meet will be held on Saturday, October 30. Last year, over 120 high school students from Georgia to Virginia came to Duke for this fun event. Duke students are needed to make up contest problems, to help with registration, to monitor the sessions, and to grade the solutions. Those who went to high school in the Southeast should contact their math teachers there and encourage them to send a team.

Undergraduate Math Lectures:
DUMU plans to host one or two lectures this year by distinguished professors who will speak on mathematical topics of general interest. Professor Jordan Ellenberg of Princeton University is tentatively scheduled to come in early spring 2005. Please forward suggestions for other speakers to David Kraines or Oaz Niz.

Jobs for Undergraduate Students:
The math department is hiring students to grade for calculus and other courses. You may pick up an application form in Math Physics 121.
Graders for Math 25 through Math 41 are paid $7.75 per hour. Math 32X through Math 114 are paid $8.00 per hour. Most sections are allowed 4 hours per week so that's the commitment the student needs to make. Math courses on the 100 level above 114 are paid $8.25 per hour and 200 level courses are paid $8.50 per hour. Those sections require a commitment of 5 hours per section.
