Synopsis of course content
Ideals and modules over noetherian rings, gradings and Hilbert
series, affine and projective algebraic varieties, Groebner
bases, localization, primary decomposition, resolutions and
syzygies, normalization, dimension theory, completion.
Textbooks
Not yet decided. Possibilities include:
Commutative algebra, by David Eisenbud.
Introduction to commutative algebra, by Atiyah and Macdonald.
Assignments
The plan is to have five two-week homework assignments
Exams
There will be two midterms and a final exam, all take-home
