Synopsis of course content
We will study subvarieties of projective space defined by
systems of polynomial equations. This includes many varieties
whose applications extend beyond algebraic geometry (e.g Grassmannians). We will work primarily over an algebraically
closed field. There are close connections between this course
and the course on Riemann Surfaces, Math 272, and the course
on commutative algebra and affine algebraic geometry, Math 252.
Textbooks
Algebraic Geometry, by Robin Hartshorne
We will follow this text moderately closely, more
closely than the text was followed in the
course on Riemann Surfaces. We will make use of the
many fine exercises in this text. The text by Hartshorne
is much too long to be covered in a single semester, even for
students who have taken Math 252 and Math 272. We will
cover most of chapter 1, part of chapter 2, and I expect
part of chapter 3. There is an outside chance that we
could touch lightly on chapter 4 or chapter 5.
