Strand II Mini-Course: Mathematics and Biology: Mutual Benefits
(March 28 to April 27)
Instructor
Michael C. Mackey, Professor and Director of the Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics
at McGill University
Description
The class will meet, March 28 through April 27, on Mondays and
Wednesdays, 1:15pm to 2:30pm, in Physics Room 120.
Here is an outline of the course:
- Week 1: Mathematics, biology, and physics: interactions and
interdependence; biological rhythms: from clocks to chaos
- Week 2: Periodic and dynamic diseases: bifurcations at the bedside;
mathematical model for Cheyn Stokes respiration
- Week 3: Periodic hematological diseases
- Week 4: Cyclical neutropenia; dynamics in repressible and inducible
operons
- Week 5: Bistability in the lysis/lysogeny switch of phage lambda; modeling
oscillations in Hesl transcription factor
