Mathematics 282: Elliptic Partial Differential Equations (Spring 2003)
Instructor
Xin Zhou
Description
This course is an introduction to elliptic partial differential equations.
The primary goals are to learn when we can solve elliptic equations and what
are the regularity properties of the solutions. We will introduce Sobolev spaces
and the L2 theory of derivatives, using Fourier
transforms. We will give an
elementary introduction to pseudodifferential operators. Time permitting, we will also
consider variational problems and simple applications to quantum mechanics such
as determining decay proprties of eigenfunctions of Schrodinger operators.
Prerequisites
Math 241 or equivalent. Our other graduate PDE course, Math 281, is quite
independent and is not required.
