Background
The Mathematics Department is changing its prerequisites for the
B.S. and A.B. degree in Mathematics. Previously Mathematics 103 and
Mathematics 104 were prerequisites.
We are now allowing the new course,
Mathematics 105, Vector Calculus, to replace Mathematics 103,
Intermediate
Calculus, as a prerequisite for the Mathematics major.
Note that Mathematics 105 has Mathematics 104, Linear Algebra, as a
prerequisite.
We strongly encourage prospective Mathematics majors to take
Mathematics 104 followed by Mathematics 105 instead of Mathematics 103
followed by Mathematics 104.
First Offering
Mathematics 105 will first be offered in the spring of 2008.
Why the Change?
Vector calculus naturally depends on concepts and techniques of
linear algebra. Hence, a vector calculus class which assumes
linear
algebra as a prerequisite can offer a more sophisticated treatment of
the material.
Special note on scheduling A student completing second-semester calculus (Math 32 or Math 32L or Math 41) in a fall semestser should not take the Math 104/105 sequence, because Math 105 will be offered only in spring semesters. Students completing a second-semester calculus course in the fall should either take Math 103 in the spring and Math 104 in the following fall--or take Math 104 in the spring and Math 103 in the following fall.
