Materials in Mathematics
A Collection of Web Sites
with Mathematical Content
The following is a list of web sites with mathematical content. The list
is not intended to be exhaustive. Rather, it is designed to give a feel
for the range of materials available.
MathDL
-
JOMA: The Journal
of Online Mathematics and its Applications.
Collections
- The Connected
Curriculum Project (CCP): Interactive materials for courses from
precalculus to linear algebra, differential equations, and engineering
mathematics. Most modules have discussion and instructions in web pages
with downloadable computer algebra system worksheets for student exploration
and reports. The following modules are good examples of this material.
- The
Post CALC Project: Another Duke project, these materials are
designed for high school students who have finished a yearlong course
in calculus, but still have time left in their high school career. The
format is similar to the CCP materials, but these modules are considerably
longer.
- Cut the Knot: A
recreational view of many important ideas in mathematics is given via java
applets on Alex Bogolmony's site, featured regularly on MAA Online. Click
Interactive Activities on the left navigation bar to see some
of these sorted by topic.
- Virtual Laboratories in
Probability and Statistics: Kyle Siegrist of UAH provides applets
for probability and statistics, as well as the "Probability/Statistics Object
Library" containing the Java class files and source files for everything
on the site. All objects are freely available under the terms of the General
Public License. Click on Probability Spaces to try out Buffon's Coin
Experiment or other simulations.
- Demos
with Positive Impact: This site was created by Dave Hill at Temple
and Lila Roberts at Georgia Southern. While many of these materials require
MatLab or other software, there are a number of animations available.
For example, look at a Gallery of Volume Visualizations in Recent Additions.
- National Curve Bank. This site, maintained by Shirley Gray and Stewart Venit at California State Los Angeles, has much more than curves. Check the new unit on twin primes.
Other "Digital Library" related projects
-
NCTM Illuminations:
These materials are designed to illuminate the NCTM Standards. Click on
Interactive Mathlets. Check out the Vectors and Cars applet.
- Eisenhower
National Clearinghouse: Perhaps the most comprehensive web resource
for science and mathematics curriculum material, there is a wealth of on-line
learning applications throughout this site. Browse (click the triangle) on
Technology from the given link, and check out the information available
under Graphing or Computer Uses in Education.
-
MERLOT:
This is extensive project, part of the emerging National Science Digital
Library (NSDL), contains materials that range across many disciplines.
- iLumina:
Another collection in the NSDL. This site has extensive metadata available
on their entries. The material available covers biology, chemistry, computer
science, mathematics, and physics. Use Internet Explorer to search this
site.
Archives and other resources
- Math Archives:
A wide variety of resources, including public domain software.
- Math Forum: One of the oldest
web sites featuring mathematics, this site focuses on materials and services
for K-12, including the Internet Math Library that provides links to and
brief reviews of useful math websites.
- MathWorld: An encyclopedic
math site created by Eric Weisstein at Wolfram.
