Using the HP Scanjet II Scanner

Basics

The scanner is currently connected to the Windows XP machine in room 136. You will need to login to the XP machine before you can scan an image. If it appears as though someone is already logged in, please press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and select LOGOUT to log them out, then login as yourself. Your current UNIX username and password will gain access to the NT machine. In addition, you UNIX home directory will be available under drive Z: as it is called in Microsoft Windows. Please save all files to this drive and NOT to the local hard disks C: and D:.

When you are done, please LOGOUT of the XP machine. You can do so by pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE and selecting LOGOUT.

Scanning

First, you need to load the image editor with which you will scan your images. Photoshop should be an icon on the desktop and is the recommended software for scanning and editing your images. Double click on this program's icon to load it.
  • Place the image you wish to scan, face down, on the scanner. The arrow marking points to the top left of the page.
  • Go to the File menu and select Import -> Deskscan II 2.9. This will start the Deskscan software.
  • By default, the scanner will preview the image. You may select the type of SCAN you wish to do. Sharp Black and White drawing works best for text, Sharp Millions of Colors works best for photographs. You can test out the others to see how they perform. The simpler the image type, the smaller the resulting file size.
  • Use the preview image to select exactly what portion of the scanner's range you want to actually scan. You may adjust the box with the mouse to limit the area that will be scanned. Finally, press FINAL to scan the image.
  • The image is now stored in Photoshop's memory. Now would be a good time to save a copy. Hit the "Disk" icon on the tool bar near the top left. You will be presented with a window. If it is not already listing the Z: drive, please select this drive by pressing the "down arrow" beside the drive selection. You can also specify the file type by pressing the "down arrow" beside the file type selection. Enter a filename and select "SAVE".

Editing Your Image

Photoshop is an advance image editor. Some of the more useful tools are "CROP", "CUT", and "PASTE". You can select an area with the selection box tool. You use this tool by selecting the dashed box icon in the top left corner. Then draw a box on your image. The "CUT" and "PASTE" options are under the edit menu. These allow you to cut the selection from the image and paste it elsewhere. The "CROP" option is in the image menu. It will delete all images outside the selected area.
