Perspectives on Science
Julie Kimbell got her PhD at Duke in Mathematics and now works
at the
Chemical Industry Institute of
Toxicology. She spoke about computing the exposure to toxic chemicals in the nose of a rat.
Lisa Fauci
is a Professor of Mathematics at Tulane University. She works on problems in biological
fluid dynamics and told us about sperm motility.
Nancy Wilson recently worked for the US
Environmental Protection Agency. She talked about her involvement in the
recent research on pesticide (Dursban) exposure in preschool children.
She described the study and told us some preliminary results.
Lisette dePillis
is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at Harvey Mudd College. Her
talk was entitled "Shocks, Shots and the Money Box". She talked about three separate projects: computational chalenges in differential
equations with discontinuities, how to best administer chemotheraputic drugs to maximize their effectiveness, and how the funding of
universities stimulates the local economy.
Donna Gilleskie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at UNC Chapel Hill.
She described how one can mathematically model the optimal decision process for medical insurance.
Sharon Lubkin is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department at NC State. She is interested
in Biomathematics
Francoise Seillier-Moiseiwitsch is an Associate Professor in the Biostatistics Department at UNC. She
talked about the application of statistics to genetics. Specifically how one can trace the evolution of the HIV virus.
Lora Billings
works for the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC. She talked about chaos and the spread
of disease. Specifically how an ODE model can predict the infection data for the measels.
Trachette
Jackson is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. She works on models
of Tumor Growth and Treatment. Her talk focused on the ways in which the
biology of cell cycle might be important in cancer treatments.
Wanda Krassowska
Wanda Krassowska
is an Associate Professor in Duke's Biomedical Engineering department.
She spoke about her work on electroporation (the formation of pores in cell
membranes in responce to large electric shocks).
Lori Setton
Lori Setton is an Assistant Professor in Duke's Biomedical Engineering department.
She works on soft tissue mechanics and spoke about cartilage.
Terry
Gaasterland is a Duke alum who is now an Assistant Professor
at Rockefeller University. She works on
genomics. She talked about the ways in which mathematics is used to search
the gene data banks.
